The Various Prime Minister of Cameroon From 1957 To Present

Now talking about the position of prime minister of Cameroon, we are going to divide it in to two part
the first part French Cameroon and second part British Southern Cameroon. You know after the first
world war, Cameroon was partition between Britain and France, Britain decided to administer her own
part as the integral part of Nigeria and France as one territory.

A- French Cameroon from 1957 to 1960

French Cameroon from the 16th May 1957 had its first Prime minister called Andre-Marie Mbida who just stay one year to power follow by the second ever prime minister of French Cameroon by name Ahmadou Ahidjo who became PM 0n the 25 February 1958 after the fall of Mbida. Ahidjo was PM of French Cameroon from this date till 1st January when French Cameroon Achieved her independence as the Republic of Cameroon. Now when French Cameroon achieved her independence, Ahidjo became head of state and the same time prime minister. Making to become the first prime minister of the Republic of Cameroon from 1st January 1960 to the 5th of May 1960 making him 125 days as prime minister of the Republic of Cameroon and on the 15th May 1960 he appoint Charles Assale to the position of PM of the Republic of Cameroon Making CHARLES ASSALE TO BE THE FIRST PERSONNEL TO SERVE AS PRIME MINISTER UNDER PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO. From 15th May 1960 to 1st October 1961 making him a total of 1 year and 139 days as PM of the Republic of Cameroon . some reasons that account for the short lived of Mbida government are as follows;

– the french high commissioner, Jean Ramadier disliked Mbida
-Mbida anti-colonial policies contributed to his downfall. he rejected the french suggestion
that the territory be integrated as part of France.
-Mbida wanted ALCAM to have real powers and independent from any part of France.
Mbida rejected the demand for immediate independent and insisted French Cameroon was
not ripe for independent.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS FOR PAPER 1 ON THIS 1ST PART;

1) who was the first personnel who served as prime minister of French Cameroon?
2) when was he prime minister and when did he resigned?
3) who replaced him as prime minister of French Cameroon and when was that?
4)who was the first prime minter of the Republic of Cameroon?
5) who was the first prime minister to served under president Ahidjo?
6) the first pre-independence government in French Cameroon headed by a
Ca meroonian was form in which year?
7) reasons for Mbida fall? important to know them well because it can come and the ask
the following reasons account for the fall of Mbida except?

A- British Southern Cameroon from 1954 to 1961

The first personnel who serve as PM of British Southern Cameroon was Emmanuel Mbela Lifafe Endeley from 1st October 1954 to 1st February 1959 when he was replaced by JN Foncha from 1st February 1959 to the 1st October 1961. An important political event occurred in British Southern Cameroon which was the 11th February 1961 Plebiscite
conducted by the UNO to determine if British Southern Cameroon will gain her Independence by joining la Republique or Integration with the federal republic of Nigeria, it was between two main political parties the KNDP of JN FONCHA from in 1955 who wanted reunification with la Republique and CPNC of ENDELEY form in 1960 who
wanted integration with Nigeria, that day, many British Southern Cameroonians vote for the Kndp that was in favor of reunification. Now after the Bamenda all party conference, where political leaders agreed on the decision that could be taking at the foumban Constitutional conference of July 17-21 1961, why at foumban the Federal Constitution was
adopted with two federated state of EAST and WEST Cameroon with each state having its own prime minister. Now the question is this who was the first personnel who serve as prime minister of East Cameroon and who was the first personnel that serve as prime of West Cameroon. This will be seen in the following table;

A- EAST CAMEROON
NAME-POLITICAL
PARTY
YEAR APPOINTED YEAR CHANGE

Vincent de Paul Ahanda

Simon Pierre Tchoungui
from UC and later CNU

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS FOR PAPER 1 ON THIS 2nd PART;

3)who was the first prime ministerof West Cameroon to served in the single party system?
4) who were the last two personnel to served as prime minister of East and West
Cameroon?
Now it is important for us to know all this because a paper question may come on this that
the following personnel have serve as PM of East or West Cameroon except? So it is
important for us to know all the personnel that have served as prime minister under the
federal system.
