SECTION A

ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION

1. A student reacted $8.72\text{ g}$ of 2-bromobutane ($C_4H_9Br$) with excess aqueous sodium hydroxide and obtained $4.28\text{ g}$ of butan-2-ol ($C_4H_9OH$). The equation of the reaction is:

$$C_4H_9Br + NaOH \longrightarrow C_4H_9OH + NaBr$$

The relative molecular mass of 2-bromobutane is $136.9$ and that of butan-2-ol is $74$.

  • (i) Give the structural formula of 2-bromobutane. (1 mark)

  • (ii) Determine the percentage yield of the reaction. (2 marks)

2. A stationary football of mass $0.44\text{ kg}$ is kicked and leaves the player’s boot at a velocity of $32\text{ m s}^{-1}$.

  • Calculate the change in momentum of the football. (2 marks)

3. A filament lamp is rated as $30\text{ W; } 120\text{ V}$. A potential difference of $120\text{ V}$ is applied across the lamp.

  • (i) Calculate the current in the filament wire. (1 mark)

  • (ii) Calculate the number of electrons passing a point on the wire in $3.0\text{ hours}$. (2 marks)

4. A spring balance is used to weigh a cylinder that is immersed in oil as shown in Figure 1. The reading on the spring balance is $4.8\text{ N}$. The length of the cylinder is $5.0\text{ cm}$ and the cross-sectional area of the cylinder is $13\text{ cm}^2$. The weight of the cylinder is $5.3\text{ N}$.

(Image description: Figure 1 showing a cylinder suspended by a thin wire from a spring balance into a container of oil. The depth of the cylinder is labeled as $5\text{ cm}$.)

  • (i) The cylinder is in equilibrium when it is immersed in the oil. Explain this in terms of the forces acting on the cylinder. (1 mark)

  • (ii) Calculate the density of the oil. (2 marks)

5. A stationary nucleus of a radioactive isotope $X$ decays by emitting an $\alpha$-particle to produce a nucleus of neptunium-237 and $5.5\text{ MeV}$ of energy. The decay is represented by:

$$X \longrightarrow {}^{237}_{93}Np + {}^4_2\alpha + 5.5\text{ MeV}$$
  • (i) Calculate the number of protons and the number of neutrons in a nucleus of $X$. (2 marks)

  • (ii) Explain why the energy transferred to the $\alpha$-particle as kinetic energy is less than the $5.5\text{ MeV}$ of energy released in the decay process. (1 mark)

6. (i) Name the type of chemical bond found in sodium chloride. (1 mark)

  • (ii) Explain why solid sodium chloride does not conduct electricity, but an aqueous solution of sodium chloride conducts electricity. (2 marks)

7. (i) State the function of a diode in an electrical circuit. (1 mark)

  • (ii) Draw a diagram to show how a diode is connected to a battery in reverse biased mode. (2 marks)
