1. How far did social and geographical factors influence population movements in Cameroon
during the 19
th century.
A two part question centered on the social and geographical factors of population movement in the
first part and the other factors in the second part.
Part I: Social and Geographical factors of population movements
a) Social factors:
– Population pressure e.g Bamileke, Tikar migration from the North
– Cultural ties e.g Nso/Bamum, Bangang/Ejagham, Mbo/Bakossi migrations.
– Slave trade and slave raids e.g. Bafut and Bali Chamba from the North
– Death of a leader e.g Kom movement from Babessi to Laikom
b) Geographical factors
– Climatic changes e.g Bali Chamba movement from North because of droughts.
– Epidemic or natural calamities e.g. Widikum from Mamfe region towards River Momo because
of chicken pox
– Desire for natural protection (role of mountains) e.g. Nso movement from Kovifem to Kimbo
in 1825, Kom to Laikom Hills.
– Influence of water bodies e.g. Bamum migration to the banks of River Noun, Duala movement
to River Wouri
Part II: Other factors of Population movement
Political reasons:
– Inter-tribal wars e.g. Nso/Nkar. Bamum/Bamileke, Bamileke/Bali Chamba, etc
– Dynastic quarrels e.g. Bali Chamba, Nso/Bamum, etc
– Payment of tributes e.g. Bu, Tingoh, Obang moved from Bafut, etc
– Search for peace e.g. Mendankwe leaving Nkwen, Kom to Laikom, Bamileke to Western
Plateau,etc
– Resistance to alien rule e.g. Widikum migration to Bali
