Question 1:
Preliminary works are good in a construction site before the start of the actual work. This aspect of studies is done on the site where the project is supposed to be realized. This has two major headings under which these studies are carried out. From this you should answer the following questions;
a) What do you understand by preliminary works? why is this aspect important in civil engineering? (5 marks)
b) State the Two headings under which these preliminary studies are done and list the aspects to be studied under them. (5 marks)
c) Why is soil survey necessary to be carried out during preliminary studies? (5 marks)
d) Why is it said that preliminary works play essential role in the successful execution of the project? (5 marks)

Question 2:
Substructures are parts of constructions that transfers the loads of a building to the ground. They also isolates it horizontally from the ground. This includes foundations and basement retaining walls.
Sometimes, retaining structures which are designed to retain soil, act as retention systems, permanent foundations and ground water barriers also fall in this category.
There are several types of retaining structures that maybe used as the situation requires. These include sheet piles, cantilever walls, diaphragm walls and mechanically stabilized earth walls.
a) Outline any three (03) functions of a diaphragm wall. (4.5 marks)
b) State any three (03) functions of a guide wall in the construction of diaphragm walls. (4.5 marks)
c) With the aid of a clean sketch, show how a cantilever retaining wall can be reinforced. (6 marks)
d) Make a clean sketch of wooden sheet piles and reinforced concrete sheet piles. Show how two units of the piles can be joint together. (5 marks)

Question 3:
The construction enterprise you work for, won a contract to construct a series of residential buildings for a real estate company. You are in the team for concreting the ground floors at this stage of the project.
a) In a point form, describe the process of realizing the ground floor from start to finish. (7 marks)
b) With the help of a clean sketch, show a vertical section through the ground floor and name the parts. (10 marks)
c) State the purpose of over site concrete in timber floor construction. (3 marks)
