SECTION B: SUMMARY WRITING

Passage: Climate Change (250 words)

Climate change refers to long-term changes in the Earth’s temperature and weather patterns. Although climate variations occur naturally, recent climate change is largely caused by human activities. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, leading to global warming. Deforestation also contributes to climate change because trees, which absorb carbon dioxide, are cut down for farming, logging, and urban development. Industrial activities and modern agricultural practices further increase the emission of harmful gases.

The effects of climate change are already visible across the world. Rising global temperatures have led to the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, causing sea levels to rise. This threatens coastal communities with flooding and erosion. Extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, heat waves, and storms are becoming more frequent and severe. These events destroy homes, crops, and infrastructure, leading to food shortages and economic losses.

Climate change also affects human health and biodiversity. Higher temperatures encourage the spread of diseases, while air and water pollution worsen living conditions. Many plant and animal species are unable to adapt quickly to changing climates, leading to habitat loss and extinction. If climate change is not addressed urgently, its consequences will continue to worsen. Therefore, collective efforts such as reducing emissions, conserving forests, and using renewable energy are essential to protect the planet for future generations.
