1. This paper has three independent sections
2. Answer any two questions from sections A and B respectively
3. SECTION C has one compulsory question
4. All questions carry equal marks

6. Calculators are allowed
7. This paper is evaluated on 70 marks and will be weighted as 35% of the subject total marks
SECTION A: NOTIONS OF MATERIALS
1. Furniture users have increased the demand of cabinet with veneered surfaces.
a) Explain briefly two factors that determine the grain pattern of veneer. (4marks)
b) Describe with sketches, the grain pattern of veneer obtained from: crotch, burl and stump. (3marks)
c) Prior to veneering, it is advisable not to use a solid substrate. Justify and indicate an alternative. (4marks)
d) Outline three reasons for covering cabinet surfaces with veneer. (3marks)

2. When planning to build a cabinet, it is recommended to select wood whose properties comply with those required
for cabinet work.
a) Explain the importance of the following wood properties on cabinet designs;
i) Appearance
ii) Moisture content,
ii) Working quality. (9marks)
b) Demonstrate with sketches the following veneer matching:
i) Herring bone match
ii) Checked board match (5marks)
