    Find the number of terms in the progression.

    (ii) Find the numerical value of the term independent of x in the expansion of (3x−3×21​)9.

  5. (i) Express the complex number z=1+2i−5+10i​ in the form a+bi, where a,b∈R.

    Hence or otherwise, find the modulus and the argument of z3.

    (ii) Given that f(x)=x3−2x−11, show that the equation f(x)=0 has a root between 2 and 3.

    Taking 2 as a first approximation to the root of the equation f(x)=0, use one iteration of the Newton-Raphson procedure to obtain a second approximate root, giving the answer to one decimal place.

  6. (i) The function f is periodic with period 4. Given that f(x)={x2−24−x​for 0≤x<2for 2≤x≤4​,

    (a) evaluate f(19) and f(−43).

    (b) sketch the graph of f(x) in the range −4≤x≤8.

    (ii) A relation R is defined on Z, the set of integers, by aRb if and only if (a+b) is even.

    Show that R is an equivalence relation.

    (b) Sketch the curve y=x−1x−4​, showing clearly the points where the curve crosses the coordinate axes and the behaviour of the curve near its asymptotes.
