SECTION A
MAP WORK

1. Study the Map Extract of TAVISTOCK (1:50.000) provided and answer the questions that follow:
(a) State:
(i) The height of land in grid square 5585 (Rattlebrook Hill).
(ii) Five human features found in grid square 5177.
(iii) The drainage pattern formed by the tributary of River Tavy.
(iv) The distance along the road’B3357 from 520750 to the right end of the map.
(v) The difference between the landscape in square 5276 and that in 5181. (13 marks)
(b) Draw a cross section diagram of the portion of the map between 490820 and 520800 and
annotate the following:
(i) The road A386
(ii) The Trigonometrical station
(iii) The dismantled railway
(iv) The tributary of River Tavy (8marks)
(c) Compare TAVISTOCK and PRINCETOWN under the headings: site, situation, functions.

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

2. Study the following geographical definitions:
(i) Crescent shaped section of a former pronounced meander now separated from the main river.
(ii) A long depression between two parallel faults formed by either the forces of tension or compression.
(iii) Volcanic mount with alternating layers of lava, ash and cinder with several vents.
(iv) A long narrow ridge of hard rock in the hot desert that lies parallel to prevailing winds.
(v) An isolated bare pillar of rock with steep sides in the ocean.
(vi) Parallel ridges of sand in the hot desert lying in the direction of the prevailing wind.
(a) Name the features defined. (3 marks)
(b) Select any TWO of the features named in (a)-and:
(i) Draw well labelled diagrams to show their characteristics.
(ii) Describe the processes that are involved in their formation. (8 marks)
(c) State TWO effects of earthquakes and one way by which each of these effects can be reduced. (4 marks)
(d) Explain TWO (2) reasons ’why hot deserts are increasing in size in most parts of the world today.

3. Study the diagram of the hydrological (water) cycle (Figure 1).

(b) (i) Briefly explain each of the following phenomena: global warming, floods,desertification and tropical storms. (8marks)
(ii) Select any ONE of these phenomena in b (i) and state how its consequences can be reduced. (5 marks)
(c) In your answer booklet, complete the table below on the effects of the revolution of the
earth in the Northern Hemisphere.

4. (a) Study the flow diagram (Figure 2) which shows the farming system for an extensive
mechanised cereal farm.

(c) Give FOUR (4) advantages and THREE (3) disadvantages of the use of the internet.(7 marks)
