The high pace of environmental degradation is most noticeable in towns and cities where overcrowding
poses serious problems of waste management. In the cities of Yaounde and Douala, for example, council
authorities have often resorted to the destruction of slums in order to improve on drainage and reduce
environmental pollution. Even in rural communities, certain traditional agricultural practices continue to have
a damaging effect on the environment, due to ignorance and illiteracy.. In Kopo village, for instance, there is
indiscriminate felling of trees to create space for new farms in a bid to replace those considered infertile, as
well as a massive use of farm chemicals by farmers.

of environmental protection by first of all taking good care of the school environment…
As a matter of fact, environmental protection is not only the responsibility of state governments but 2()
also that of homes and local communities. It is
, regrettable that in many homes, even basic rules of hygiene
and sanitation have been pushed to the background. This g^p in home education has a serious negative effect
on environmental protection. In fact, it is embarrassing to note that issues of basic hygiene and sanitation have
often led to quarrels, even among siblings, and have generated several conflicts among neighbours.
