study this extract bearing on German occupation and administration of Cameroon ( 1884-1 )16) and

The intense scramble for Cameroon in the 1880’s by some European powers ended with the signing of an annexation
treaty in July 1884.
The German official who championed this achievement for his country was… Then followed the appointment of an
interim commissioner pending the establishment of a permanent German colonial government in the territory.
In 1885, a pioneer Governor for Cameroon was appointed, who expanded German influence into the interior while 5
German missionaries also implanted themselves in the territory.
Native reactions to German colonisation of their land was mixed, while, some favoured the Germans, others
vehemently rejected them.
In 1895 a ruthless and brutal Governor was appointed for the territory. During his rule, several innovations were
undertaken.
Examples included the development of plantations and the establishment of German trading concessions ; that
traded with the Bamileke and Bamum and the other that traded with the Ewondo and Bulu people.
In 1906. a Douala chief petitioned this Governor to the German government in Berlin for his administrative excesses.
These complaints were investigated and some were found to be true.
This Governor was recalled, tried and found guilty. He was dismissed and sentenced to prison.
The natives found favour in the new Governor who replaced the sentenced one.
Some scholars consider German rule to have been a mixed blessing to the natives whose endurance with the
Germans abruptly ended in 1916.
