Decisions of the Foumban Conference
The reunified Cameroon would be known, as the Federal Republic of Cameroon. An executive president who was to be assisted by a vice president would head it.
- There was to be two autonomous federated states each headed by a prime minister.
- A Federal National Assembly of 50 members was created 10 of it members were to come from West Cameroon.
- Meanwhile there was also to be an East Cameroon House of Assembly and a West Cameroon House of chiefs.
- The Federal Republic of Cameroon was to have a single nationality.
- The flag was to be the green, Red and yellow with 2 gold stars on the Green band.
- Yaounde was to be the national capital and at the same time the capital of East Cameroon. Buea was to be the capital of West Cameroon.
How the decisions taken at Foumban later changed.
- On 20 May 1972 Ahidjo organised a referendum in which Cameroonians voted to abolish the Federal system in favour of a unitary state. The name changed from the Federal Republic of Carneroon to the United Republic of Cameroon.
- The Federal states of West Cameroon and east Cameroon were abolished and Cameroon was divided into 7 provinces. 1 The offices, of vice president, the prime ministers of East and west Cameroon were abolished.
- The East and West Cameroon Houses of Assemble the Federal House of Assembly and West Cameroon House of chiefs were dissolved in favour of one National Assembly of 120 members.
- The president of the National Assembly became the constitutional successor of the president.
- A centralised system of government was established in Yaounde.
