Physics Section 1 (1 Hour)

Answer ALL questions in one hour

Question 1

(a)

  • (i) Define pressure and state its unit. (2 marks)

  • (ii) State one factor that affects pressure at a point in a liquid. (1 mark)

(b) A sink plug has an area of $0.006 \text{ m}^2$. It is used to block the outlet of a sink filled with water to a depth of $0.09 \text{ m}$. The density of water is $1000 \text{ kg/m}^3$. Calculate:

  • (i) The pressure on the plug due to the water. (2 marks)

  • (ii) The force needed to remove the plug from the outlet. (2 marks)

Question 2

(a) The specific heat capacity of water is $4200 \text{ J/kg °C}$. What does this mean? (2 marks)

(b) A student uses a metal pot to boil water for tea. The temperature of $2 \text{ kg}$ of the water increased by $80 \text{ °C}$.

  • (i) Calculate the heat absorbed by the water. (2 marks)

  • (ii) State with a reason, the best colour to paint the outside of the metal cooking pot? (2 marks)

Question 3

(a) State the principle of moment. (2 marks)

(b) Figure (1) shows a simple toy. Different animal shapes can be positioned so that the $50 \text{ cm}$ rod balances horizontally.

(Image description: A rod balanced at pivot P. An elephant of $2\text{N}$ is $15 \text{ cm}$ to the left of P. A monkey of unknown weight is $20 \text{ cm}$ to the right of P.)

Calculate:

  • (i) The moment exerted by the elephant shape of weight $2\text{N}$ about the pivot P. (2 marks)

  • (ii) The weight of the monkey shape. (2 marks)

(c) Name one everyday situation where moment is used. (1 mark)

Question 4

(a) Define term e.m.f as used in current electricity. (2 marks)

(b) A source of e.m.f. $20\text{V}$ and negligible internal resistance is connected to resistors of $2\Omega$, $2\Omega$ and $3\Omega$ as shown in the figure below.

(Image description: A circuit with a $20\text{V}$ battery, a $3\Omega$ resistor in series with a parallel combination of two $2\Omega$ resistors. One $2\Omega$ resistor has a switch K.)

Find the ammeter reading when switch K is:

  • (i) Open (2 marks)

  • (ii) Closed (2 marks)

(c) What is meant by short circuit as applied to electricity? (1 mark)
