SECTION I (One and a half hour). ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION.
1. a) What makes an equation relating physical quantities to be:
i) homogeneous?
ii) correct?
b) The pressure, P, exerted by a sample of a real gas in a container is given by the expression
(𝑃 + 𝑉𝑎2) (𝑉 − 𝑏) = 𝑛𝑅𝑇 where V is the volume of the gas in the container, a and b are correction
constants, n is number of moles, R is molar gas constant and T is the absolute temperature. Determine
the S.I base units of the correction constants a and b given that the equation is homogeneous. (6
marks)
2. a) State the main observations of Rutherford’s alpha-scattering experiment.
b) Describe the structure of the atom that can be deduced from these observations? (6 marks)
3. Figure 1 shows a capacitor and a resistor in series with a voltmeter connected across the capacitor.
Figure 1
a) Sketch a graph to show how the reading of the voltmeter varies with time if the circuit is completed
when there was no charge on the capacitor plates.
b) Use another sketch graph to explain how the reading of the meter will change with time if the meter
was rather connected across the resistor. (7 marks)
4) The image of an object may be formed either using a plane mirror or a convex lens. Bring out two ways
in which the images formed by the two devices may be;
i) similar
ii) different (4 marks)
5) Figure 2 shows a bob suspended along a vertical plane on an inextensible thread whose mass is
negligible compared to the mass of the bob. The syste
