SECTION ONE: LOGIC

1) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

One philosophy teacher presented a paper in front of a crowd of students and teachers on World Philosophy Day stressing that: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping our world at an unprecedented pace. Philosophy grounds AI in ethics, clarifies its possibilities, and limits and ensures that technological progress is aligned with human dignity and collective well-being He reiterated that: “If learners use digital technologies wisely, there will be academic success. but if learners use immoral content that destroys, their future won’t be bright.” One philosophy student who also offers ICT told his friends that either learners equip themselves with digital literacy or they won’t succeed in this our modern world. In the same vein, one on-looker shouted aloud that: “Since YouTube, Facebook and Google are powerful tools for learning and research, then all social media platforms are excellent.”

a(i) Give the contrapositive of: “Some students are not scammers”, in the Boolean system and justify its validity. (3 marks)

(ii) Explain why an AEO-3 syllogism is invalid in the Boolean system but valid with the Aristotelian system. (2 marks)

(b) Pick out:

(i) A hypothetical proposition suitable for a complex affirmative dilemma. (1 mark)

(ii) Use b(i) to construct a complex affirmative dilemma. (3 marks)

(iii) Refute the dilemma in b(ii) above by rebutting it. (3 marks)

(c) Identify:

(i) A disjunctive proposition from the passage. (1 mark)

(ii) Transform c(i) above into its hypothetical form. (1 mark)

(iii) Use the derived proposition in c(ii) above to construct an invalid modus tollens argument. (3 marks)

d) Given that: Some learned men are not poor persons since no android owners are poor persons.

(i) Identify the order of the enthymematic argument in (d) above. (1 mark)

(ii) Deduce the missing premise and determine the mood and figure of the syllogism. (3 marks)

(e) Pick out:

(i) A fallacy from the passage. (1 mark)

(ii) Give the name of the fallacy. (1 mark)

(iii) Explain how the fallacy has been committed. (2 marks)


2) a) State the logical relationship between the following sets of propositions:

(i) All snakes are reptiles and some snakes are not reptiles.

(ii) All non-liars are honest people and some honest people are non-liars.

(iii) No soldiers are cowards and some non-soldiers are not non-cowards.

(3 × 2 marks)

b) Using the terms: “men of God” as middle term, “Pastors” as minor term, “impostors” as major term:

(i) Construct an OAO-3 syllogistic argument. (3 marks)

(ii) Express the argument above by the use of the Venn diagram technique. (3 marks)

(iii) What can be inferred of its contrary when the minor premise is false? (1 mark)

c) If A, B and C are true statements and X, Y and Z are false statements, determine the truth values of the following compound statements:

(i) $(A \supset C) \supset (X \cdot \sim Y)$

(ii) $(B \supset Z) \equiv (A \vee \sim B)$
