Physics Mock Exam – Paper 2 (Section Extract)
4. a) i) On the same axis, sketch a graph of the variations of intermolecular force and intermolecular potential energies of a pair of molecules
ii) Use your sketch to explain the existence of three phases of matter and Hooke’s law.
b) Determine the density of nitrogen gas molecules at 27 °C under normal atmospheric pressure.
(6 marks)
5. A metal surface of threshold wavelength, $\lambda_0$, is illuminated with light of wavelength 200 nm whose ends are connected to a low energy thermal bath.
a) i) What do you understand by the threshold wavelength of a metal?
ii) Distinguish between photoelectric effect and thermionic emission
b) Determine the work function and threshold wavelength of the metal if the ejected electron moves with kinetic energy 0.35 eV.
(6 marks)
ANSWER EITHER QUESTION 6 (a), (b) and (c) OR 6 (d), (e) and (f).
6. EITHER 6 (a), (b) and (c)
(a) i) State Newton’s second law of motion. (2 marks)
ii) Describe an experiment to show that the acceleration of a body is inversely proportional to its mass. (8 marks)
(b) In one such experiment, the following paper tape was observed when a 200 g mass was released.
(Description of Figure 3: A ticker timer tape showing a series of dots. A section covering 4 intervals is marked as 2.5 cm. A subsequent section covering 4 intervals is marked as 12.5 cm.)
i) Determine the acceleration of the mass if the frequency of the a.c used is 50 Hz.
ii) What would be the impulse if its collision on a fixed wall last for 0.15 s?
(5 marks)
(c) A fuel pump of diameter of 1.70 cm, sends out fuel of density 0.75 g cm⁻³ at a rate of 2.50 m s⁻¹.
i) Determine the mass of fuel released by the pump per second.
ii) How long will it take this fuel pump to fill a 250 litres container?
(5 marks)
