African Reactions to European Conquest | Form 4 History

African responses to European penetration included armed resistance, diplomatic negotiation, migration, non-cooperation and collaboration.

Reasons for Resistance

  • Defence of political independence and territory.
  • Opposition to taxation, forced labour and land seizure.
  • Protection of religion, culture and customary authority.
  • Rejection of racial discrimination and colonial abuses.

Forms of Resistance

  • Armed warfare and attacks on colonial forces.
  • Burning crops or settlements and refusing labour.
  • Diplomatic appeals and treaties.
  • Migration away from colonial control.

Examples

The Maji-Maji revolt in German East Africa and the Abyssinian victory over Italy at Adowa in 1896 are important examples. Some rulers also collaborated to protect local interests or gain advantages.

Assessment

Resistance was often weakened by divisions, superior European weapons, lack of coordination and colonial reprisals, but it demonstrated African opposition to foreign domination.
