MAPWORK

 

1. Study the topographic map extract of Mabombe and Environs at 1:50.000 provided and answer the questions that follow,

(a) Describe and explain the relief on both sides of the River Dibombe                                                          (8 marks)

(b)         (i) Draw a sketch of the drainage network of the unnamed tributary stream that joins the River Dibombe at grid square 6285, north east of Mabombe settlement. Using the Strahler’s method, rank the stream and draw a frequency table.                                                                                                                                                    (5 marks)

(ii) Calculate the bifurcation ratio (Rb) of the network and state its significance.                                      (3 marks)

(c) Comment on the location (site and situation) of Mabombe,                                                                      (5 marks)

(d) Using map evidence only, account for the distribution of plantation agriculture                               (4 marks)

(e) Describe and account for the distribution of the road network in the map extract                              (5 marks)

3. Study the data below showing the variation in the discharge of the River Ntem (South Cameroon) for the period 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2013

(g) Apart from discharge, state any Two other drainage characteristics that can be measured in a drainage basin.

4.   (a) Briefly describe the characteristics of the climate of the Northern Lowlands and the Coastal Lowlands of
Cameroon.

(b)    Show how the differences in the characteristics of the climate types have resulted in:
(i)     Differences in types of agriculture

(ii)     Differences in the magnitude of problems faced by the farmers                                                                     (7marks)
5.     (a) Identify the main soil type in the South Cameroon Low Plateau and briefly describe its characteristics.

(ii) Examine the major touristic attractions (apart from the parks and reserves) in this northern part and
explain why tourists visit them.                                                                                                                                    
(10 marks)
(c)  Outline the infrastructure and services that have been put in place to facilitate tourism here.                  (5 marks)


7.           (a) With reference to any two contrasting regions of Cameroon, explain the contribution of any following factors towards the existing contrast in the level of economic development.                                                    (15 marks)
Relief, historical factor, socio-cultural differences, nature of soils and geology.
(b) What measures have been undertaken to reduce the development gap between the identified regions?                                                                                                                                                                                                               (8 marks)
