Family Protection, Child Rights and Responsibilities | Form 3 Citizenship

The family is the basic unit of society. Family protection refers to laws, institutions and social efforts that safeguard family members from abuse, neglect, exploitation and avoidable conflict.

Measures that protect the family

  • laws protect marriage, children and family welfare;
  • courts may make arrangements for children when parents separate;
  • social welfare and family-support services assist families in difficulty;
  • health and education services support the development of children;
  • community, religious and traditional institutions can encourage reconciliation; and
  • organisations may educate parents about health, planning and responsible care.

Rights of the child

A child is entitled to protection and conditions that support healthy development. Important rights include the right to a name and nationality, education, adequate nutrition, healthcare, expression, protection from abuse and the right to life.

Responsibilities of a child

  1. obey reasonable family rules and respect parents and guardians;
  2. assist with suitable household duties;
  3. respect brothers, sisters, elders and other people;
  4. work seriously at school and use learning opportunities well;
  5. maintain peace in the family;
  6. obey the law and school regulations; and
  7. care for shared property and the environment.

Summary

Family protection requires cooperation among parents, children, government services and the wider community. Children have rights, but they also have age-appropriate responsibilities.
