German Annexation of Cameroon and the Germano-Duala Treaty | Form 3 History

German annexation transformed Cameroon from a region of independent communities and coastal trading relations into a German colony.

Reasons for German Annexation

German traders wanted protection, commercial advantage and political control. The German government also feared British and French expansion and sought a colonial empire.

The Treaty of 12 July 1884

The Germano-Duala Treaty was signed by German representatives and some Duala kings and chiefs. It transferred or limited sovereignty and gave Germany a basis for claiming control.

Stages of Annexation

  • German officials and warships strengthened their presence on the coast.
  • Treaties and military pressure extended German claims inland.
  • Resistance and negotiation occurred as German authority expanded.

Consequences

Annexation weakened the authority of many rulers, introduced colonial administration and enabled German exploitation of land, labour and resources.
