Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Resolution | Form 3 Citizenship

Human rights are basic freedoms and entitlements that belong to all people because they are human. They include the right to life, dignity, liberty, education, security, fair treatment and participation.

Threats to human rights

Rights may be threatened by discrimination, violence, torture, exploitation, arbitrary detention, trafficking, child labour, forced marriage and denial of education or healthcare.

Conflict

Conflict is a disagreement or struggle between individuals or groups. It may arise from competition over land or resources, discrimination, poor communication, injustice, political differences or unequal treatment.

Peaceful conflict resolution

  1. identify the real causes of the disagreement;
  2. listen to each side without prejudice;
  3. use dialogue, negotiation or mediation;
  4. seek a fair compromise where possible;
  5. use lawful institutions when agreement cannot be reached; and
  6. reject threats, revenge and violence.

Gender and minority rights

Women, men, children, persons with disabilities and minority groups deserve equal dignity and protection. Equality does not require the erasure of cultural identity; it requires that no person is denied rights or opportunities because of gender, origin, language, disability or group membership.

Summary

Respect for rights, equality, dialogue and lawful justice are foundations of peace and responsible citizenship.
