Computers range from very small to very large machines, with some capable of doing millions of calculations in a single second, while others may take long periods of time to do even the simplest calculations. Computers can be classified into five categories, on the basis of their size and application.
- Supercomputers: These are the fastest and most expensive type of computers. They can perform hundreds of millions of computations per second.
- Mainframes computers: They are powerful multi-user computers capable of supporting up to hundreds of users simultaneously. They are used by large organizations like meteorological surveys and statistical institutes for performing bulk mathematical computations.
- Minicomputers: Smaller, mid-range systems for business applications.
- Microcomputers: These are the smallest category of computers that range in size from servers to handheld devices. They are designed to be used by one person at a time. Microcomputers, also called personal computers (PC), can be further classified into desktop computers, laptop computers, tablet PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
- Mobile Devices (Smartphones, Tablets): Portable, handheld devices.
Classification by
- Analog Computers: Process continuous data (e.g., speed, temperature)
- Digital Computers: Process discrete data (e.g., numbers, text)
- Hybrid Computers: Combine analog and digital processing
Classification by Application
- General-purpose Computers: For everyday use (e.g., laptops, desktops)
- Special-purpose Computers: For specific tasks (e.g., calculators, embedded systems)
