Lesson 24: The boot process

Starting a computer

To start a computer, process as follows:

  • Check if all the components are well-connected to each other.
  • Press the power button on the CPU
  • Press the power button on the monitor
  • Then wait to let the BIOS be loaded and your computer’s operating system will start.

Booting process of a computer

When the computer starts, the following steps will be followed:

  • When you press the power button on the central unit, an electrical pulse is sent to the mother-board which will turn on the BIOS (Basic Input Output System)
  • The BIOS that contains the POST (Power on Self-Test) will test and initialize all the hardware. During this sequence called pre-boot, all the components will be tested as well as their compatibility. If this sequence does not pass, the operating system will not be launched.
  • If the hardware tests are validated, the BIOS loads the operating system into the RAM (Random Access Memory)
  • The operating system boots up and brings us to the desktop or a session
