Processing Devices
There are several types of computer processing units, including:
- Central Processing Unit (CPU): the primary processing device that executes instructions and performs calculations.
- Graphics Processing Unit (GPU): a processing device designed specifically for graphics rendering and computation.
- Digital Signal Processor (DSP): used for signal processing and analysis.
Storage Devices
The storage unit of a computer comprises two types of memory/storage: primary and secondary.
- Primary memory (volatile memory): computer memory that temporarily stores data and programs while a computer is running. Example: RAM (Random Access Memory).
- Secondary memory (non-volatile memory): computer memory that permanently stores data or programs even when the computer is powered off. Examples: Hard Disk Drive (HDD), USB drive, ROM, memory card, etc.
