SECTION I

1.

  • a) What is the commercial unit for measurement of electrical energy consumption? (1mark)

  • b) An electric heater rated 1000 W is used in a home for 5 hours each day. If the electricity company sells 1 Kwhr at the cost of 50 frs, how much will it cost to run the heater for 30 days? (3marks)

  • c) The heater above is connected on 220 V mains. Determine the fuse value that would be good for the heater? (2marks)

2. Figure 1 below shows a bucket containing 25 kg of sand, hanging from a support as shown in a building site.

(Figure 1 shows a bucket labeled “Bucket of sand” suspended by a “string” from a horizontal support).

  • a) Copy the diagram and show all the forces acting on the bucket. (2marks)

  • b) Calculate the weight of the sand in the bucket. (2marks)

  • c) Give one difference between the weight and mass of the sand. (2marks)

  • d) If the system is in equilibrium, calculate the support provided by the string (neglect the weight of the bucket). (2marks)

3. Figure 2 above shows a simple closed circuit connected to a low voltage battery.

(Figure 2 shows a vertical wire passing through a horizontal “Cardboard” sheet, connected to a battery source).

  • a) Copy the diagram and show on it the direction of current and the magnetic flux pattern on the cardboard. (3marks)

  • b) Name one rule that can be used to determine the direction of the magnetic field around the wire. (1mark)

  • c) State one thing that can be done to increase the strength of the magnetic field. (1mark)

4. Infra-red (IR) rays, ultra violet (UV) rays and visible light are all part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

  • a) Arrange the above radiations in order of increasing frequency. (3marks)

  • b) Name a detector each for infra-red and ultra violet radiations. (2marks)

  • c) Give two properties that are common to all electromagnetic (em) waves. (2marks)
