The Baka and Other Indigenous Peoples of Cameroon | Form 2 History

The Baka are an indigenous forest people of Central Africa. The term “pygmy” appears in older historical texts, but Baka is preferred by the people themselves and is more respectful.

Settlement and Social Life

Baka communities traditionally lived in or near the equatorial forest. Family groups cooperated in movement, food gathering, hunting and decision-making.

Economic Activities

  • Hunting and fishing.
  • Gathering wild fruits, roots, honey and medicinal plants.
  • Small-scale agriculture and exchange with neighbouring farming communities.

Relationship with the Forest

The forest provides food, medicine, shelter and cultural meaning. Baka knowledge includes detailed understanding of plants, animals and seasons.

Contemporary Challenges

Land pressure, restricted access to forests, discrimination, limited services and the need to protect cultural rights affect many indigenous communities.
