Advanced Level Physics Revision: Mechanics & Modern Physics
Mastering Advanced Level Physics requires clear mathematical proofs, a strong command of dimensional analysis, and the ability to interpret quantum phenomena. Test your problem-solving skills with these selected structured questions from image_24607d.jpg.
1. Physical Quantities & Dimensional Analysis
Question 1
-
(a) State the conditions which are necessary for a physical equation to be correct. (2 marks)
-
(b) The time, $t$, rate of flow of a liquid of volume, $V$, through a uniform pipe of length, $L$, and radius, $r$, under laminar flow conditions is given by the equation:
$$\frac{V}{t} = \frac{\pi P}{8\eta L}r^4$$Where $P$ is the pressure of the fluid and $\eta$ is the coefficient of viscosity of the fluid expressed in units of $\text{N s m}^{-2}$. Show that this equation is homogeneous. (4 marks)
2. Modern Physics: The Photoelectric Effect
Question 2
Figure 1 in image_24607d.jpg shows a monochromatic beam of light falling on a photocell. As the reverse p.d. between the anode and the cathode is increased, the current measured by the micro ammeter decreases. When the p.d. reaches a value, $V_s$, the current is zero. Explain:
-
(a) Why the current is zero at $V_s$. (2 marks)
-
(b) What would be the effect on the current if:
-
(i) Only the intensity of the incident radiation is increased?
-
(ii) Radiation of the same intensity but higher frequency is used? (4 marks)
-
3. Thermal Properties & Thermometry
Question 3
When the junction $X$ of a thermocouple is placed in melting ice and junction $Y$ in steam at $180^\circ\text{C}$ ($100^\circ\text{C}$ in the text), the emf is $6.0\text{ mV}$. If junction $X$ is removed from the melting ice and placed in a liquid bath at constant temperature, $\theta^\circ\text{C}$, while junction $Y$ remains in the steam, the emf is $2.6\text{ mV}$.
-
(a) What is the temperature of the liquid in the bath on the centigrade scale of the thermocouple? (4 marks)
-
(b) State one particular advantage of a thermocouple over other types of thermometers. (1 mark)
