Practise the Real Thing: GCE Intermediate Level ICT 3 Practical Paper

Paper 3 of Information and Communication Technology (0596) is the practical paper, and it is the one candidates most often underestimate. You are not asked to define a spreadsheet or describe a database — you are marked on whether you can actually open the file in your candidate folder and carry out the operation in front of the invigilator, within one and a half hours.

Every task on this June 2026 paper is worth real marks for a single, specific action: one formula, one format change, one query, one print job. That is good news for revision, because it means you can practise the paper on any computer with a word processor, a spreadsheet and a database, and know exactly where the marks are.

Instructions to Candidates

  • Answer ALL Questions.
  • You are reminded of the necessity for good English and orderly presentation in your answers.
  • Task 1, Task 2 and Task 3 are based on softcopy materials found in a folder named Candidate folder saved on the desktop of your computer. The work of all the tasks should be saved in this Candidate folder. You may be instructed by the supervisor to rename your candidate folder.

Task 1: Word Processor (30 marks)

Open task 1 from the candidate folder and change the heading of the document as follows:

  • Font face Arial Black (2 marks)
  • Font size to 18 points (2 marks)
  • Centralize the heading (3 marks)
  • Implement a double strike through on the heading (5 marks)
  • On the body of the text, centralize all sub headings and underline them (5 marks)
  • Change the body of the text to double line spacing (5 marks)
  • Change paragraph 2 and 3 into three (3) columns and justify the columns (6 marks)
  • Save the document and print page one (1) only (2 marks)

Task 2: Spreadsheet (40 marks)

Open task 2 from the candidate folder and do the following:

  • In cell M3, calculate the total coefficients for the exams (5 marks)
  • Calculate the total marks for the student EFUET CAMILLA in cell M4 (5 marks)
  • Use the auto-fill feature to determine the total marks for the other students (3 marks)
  • Determine the average for the student EFUET CAMILLA in cell N4 (5 marks)
  • Use the auto-fill feature to determine the average for the other students (2 marks)
  • In cell N64, determine the class average (5 marks)
  • Format the cells containing the average to 2 decimal places (5 marks)
  • Format the document such that the subject titles appear on all the printed pages (5 marks)
  • Add gridlines and save your work (3 marks)
  • Print page 2 only (2 marks)

Task 3: Database (30 marks)

Carefully study the database in the candidate folder and perform the following tasks:

  • In datasheet view, format the table with the font face Arial Black (5 marks)
  • Format the date of birth to short date (5 marks)
  • In datasheet view, adjust the column widths so that all the field names can be clearly seen (5 marks)
  • Create a query to display the information of all the males from the table and save it as Male (5 marks)
  • In datasheet view, sort your query in descending order of student’s name and save the changes (5 marks)
  • Change the query orientation to landscape (3 marks)
  • Print a copy of your query (2 marks)

Examiner’s Tips for ICT Paper 3

  • Save before you print. Several tasks award marks for saving and printing separately — skipping the save can cost you both.
  • Auto-fill is examined on its own. Writing the formula for every row by hand may still lose the auto-fill marks. Use the fill handle.
  • Read the cell references exactly. M3, M4, N4 and N64 are specified for a reason; an answer in the wrong cell scores zero.
  • Repeating titles on every page is done through Print Titles / Repeat header rows, not by retyping the row.
  • Print only the page asked for. “Print page 2 only” means setting the page range — printing everything loses the mark.
