Family Life, Marriage and Family Unity | Form 4 Citizenship

The family is a basic social institution in which people receive care, protection, values and support. Family life requires responsibility, cooperation and respect among its members.

Types of families

  • Nuclear family: parents and their children.
  • Extended family: parents, children and other relatives such as grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.
  • Single-parent family: one parent and the children.
  • Adoptive family: a family formed when parents legally take responsibility for adopted children.

Marriage and related terms

Marriage is a recognised union between spouses. Monogamy is marriage involving one spouse at a time, while polygamy is a marriage in which a man has more than one wife at the same time. In Cameroon, traditional, religious and civil procedures may be involved depending on the form of marriage and the applicable law.

Reasons for marriage

People may marry because of love, companionship, the desire to establish a family, mutual assistance, care and the wish to raise children. Marriage also creates responsibilities of fidelity, support, respect and protection.

Promoting family unity

Love, respect, sincere communication, mutual support, patience and understanding strengthen family unity. Members should share responsibilities, resolve disagreements peacefully and protect children and vulnerable relatives.

Threats to family life

Poverty, domestic violence, divorce, poor communication, gossip, discrimination and irresponsible parenthood can weaken family unity. Families should seek counselling, social support and lawful protection when serious problems arise.

Summary

Stable family life depends on responsible relationships, respect for lawful marriage, care for children and cooperation among relatives.
