What is a Communication System?
A communication system is a collection of devices, software, and protocols that enable data exchange between entities.
Components of a Communication System
- Sender: the device or entity that initiates the communication.
- Receiver: the device or entity that receives the message.
- Medium (channel): the physical or virtual path through which the message is transmitted.
- Message (data): the information being transmitted.
- Protocol: the set of rules governing data transmission.
Digital vs Analogue Signals
Analogue communication systems use continuous signals to transmit data, while digital communication systems use discrete signals. Digital signals are discrete, binary (0s and 1s) and are used in computer systems, while analogue signals are continuous, varying in amplitude and frequency, and are used in audio and video transmission.
