Sensors and Actuators

Sensors and actuators are essential components in various systems, including robotics, automation, and IoT devices. A sensor detects and measures physical or environmental parameters, such as temperature, light, sound, motion, or pressure, converting these measurements into electrical signals that can be processed by a system or microcontroller.

Types of Sensors

  • Temperature sensors (e.g., thermocouples, thermistors): measure temperature changes, used in temperature control systems, weather stations, and medical devices.
  • Light sensors (e.g., photodiodes, phototransistors): detect light intensity or colour, used in lighting control systems, cameras, and solar panels.
  • Motion sensors (e.g., accelerometers, gyroscopes): measure movement, orientation, or vibration, used in robotics, gaming controllers, and navigation systems.
  • Pressure sensors (e.g., piezoelectric sensors): measure force, pressure, or stress, used in industrial automation, medical devices, and weather monitoring.
  • Sound sensors (e.g., microphones, ultrasonic sensors): detect sound waves or frequencies, used in audio equipment, voice assistants, and proximity detection.

Actuators

An actuator converts electrical energy into physical action, such as movement, force, or light, used to control or manipulate objects, systems, or environments.

Real-Life Situations

  • Temperature sensors in air conditioning systems and medical devices.
  • Motion sensors in security systems, automatic lighting, and gaming controllers.
  • Light sensors in automatic lighting, cameras, and solar panels.
  • Pressure sensors in industrial automation and blood pressure monitors.
  • Sound sensors in voice assistants, audio equipment, and proximity detection.
