Road Transport
Advantages: cheap and quick for shorter distances, offers door-to-door delivery, involves minimal documentation, is flexible for varying quantities, and is available around the clock.
Disadvantages: expensive and slow for long distances and heavy loads, affected by climate, weather, and traffic congestion, and contributes to pollution and congestion.
Rail Transport
Advantages: quick for long distances, good for bulky cargo, unaffected by traffic, doesn’t pollute cities, can provide specialised carriages, and suits low-value, high-volume cargo.
Disadvantages: involves documentation, requires loading and unloading cargo multiple times, trains can’t go everywhere, run only on schedule, are costly for short distances or small quantities, and require high capital investment to maintain tracks and trains.
Air Transport
Advantages: quick and safe for cargo handling, unaffected by topography, needs less documentation and packing, has lower insurance costs, and suits high-value, low-volume, or urgently needed cargo.
Disadvantages: expensive, affected by weather conditions, has cargo-carrying constraints, and offers limited space.
Pipeline Transport
Originally used for water, now mainly used for liquids such as petroleum products, crude oil, and gas (e.g. the Cameroon-Chad pipeline).
Advantages: reduces road congestion, delivers goods very fast, has few or no accidents, and reduces the cost of carrying fuel over distance.
Disadvantages: very high initial construction cost, can’t be used for anything besides liquids, and faults in the pipeline may be hard to detect.
