1. Study the MAP EXTRACT OF KUMBA AND ENVIRON and answer the questions that follow.

a. State the:

  • i. Spot height at grid reference 4825

  • ii. Figure at grid reference 526229

  • iii. Human activity at 4722

  • iv. Dominant physical feature at 4314

  • v. Six figure grid reference for the hospital at 5421

  • vi. Feature at grid reference 492213 (6 marks)

b. Copy the portion of the map, east of casting 50 and north of northing 20 and insert the following:

  • i. Lake Barombi Mbo

  • ii. An area of forest reserve

  • iii. Spot height 465

  • iv. Built up area

  • v. SDO’s office

  • vi. A rubber plantation

  • vii. The stretch of road from Kumba to Mambanda Mile 8 (ending at grid square 5524)

  • Add a key

c. i. Calculate the length of the road from Mambanda junction to the north passing through Ikiliwindi Mile 8.

ii. State the bearing and direction of Mukonje from Kumba.

d. i. Comment on the drainage of the map.

ii. With map evidence, state FOUR functions of Kumba and environ.

1. a i. Outline the order used to identify the location of a feature on a topographic map, using the four-figure grid reference.

ii. Give THREE differences between the procedure of map copying and map reduction.

b. * Outline the steps to follow when asked to calculate the length of a winding distance between two points.

  • State the formula you will use to calculate the distance if the map scale is 1:50,000.

  • State the unit of the final answer.

c. * Name THREE key instruments used in measuring the bearing of a place from another.

  • Give an orderly description of how the instruments mentioned above can used to determine the bearing of place B from A.

d. Outline FOUR aspects to be considered when commenting on the drainage of a map. (4 marks)
