Organs of Government and Separation of Powers in Cameroon | Form 4 Citizenship

Government is the system through which public authority is organised and exercised. Cameroon has different organs of government with related but distinct responsibilities.

The executive

The executive implements laws and manages public administration. It includes the Head of State, the government and public services responsible for carrying out national policies. The executive also prepares programmes, manages public resources and maintains public order within the law.

The legislature

The legislature makes and examines laws, represents citizens and controls public action through debate, questions and other lawful procedures. In Cameroon, Parliament consists of the National Assembly and the Senate. Parliament considers bills, discusses national issues and approves public finance according to the constitutional framework.

The judiciary

The judiciary interprets and applies the law. Courts hear cases, protect legal rights and settle disputes. Judicial independence and fair procedures help ensure that people are not punished arbitrarily and that disputes are resolved according to law.

Separation of powers

Separation of powers means that governmental authority is distributed among the executive, legislature and judiciary. The organs cooperate, but none should exercise all public power without legal limits. Checks and balances help prevent abuse, encourage accountability and protect citizens.

Importance to citizens

  • it promotes the rule of law;
  • it limits arbitrary use of public power;
  • it supports accountability and transparency;
  • it protects rights and freedoms; and
  • it provides lawful ways to challenge decisions and settle disputes.

Summary

Responsible government depends on distinct institutions, lawful cooperation and effective checks. Citizens should understand public institutions and use peaceful, legal channels to demand accountability.
