Laundering: Process and Care of Fabrics

1. Sorting

Separate laundry by colour (whites, darks, colours) to prevent dye transfer, by fabric type (delicates separate from heavier items), and by soil level.

2. Stain Treatment

Pre-treat stains with a stain remover or detergent before washing; different stains need different treatment (grease needs a degreaser, protein stains like blood need cold water and an enzyme cleaner). Soak stubborn stains in cold water before washing.

3. Washing

Choose a detergent suited to the fabric type and colour. Select water temperature carefully: cold water for delicates, bright colours, and lightly soiled clothes; warm water for moderately soiled or synthetic items; hot water for heavily soiled whites, towels, and linens. Don’t overload the machine, and use the appropriate cycle (delicate, normal, or heavy-duty) for the fabric.

4. Drying

Air drying is gentle on fabric and ideal for delicates and wool. Tumble drying should use low heat for delicates and synthetics, and medium/high heat for cotton and linen. Remove clothes promptly once dry to prevent wrinkles.

5. Ironing and Steaming

Check the care label for the correct ironing heat: low for delicates like silk, medium for wool and polyester blends, and high for cotton and linen. Steaming is a gentler alternative that avoids direct contact with the fabric.

6. Folding and Storing

Fold knitwear to avoid stretching, and hang shirts, blouses, and dresses. In moth-prone areas, use cedar blocks or lavender sachets to protect wool and other natural fibres.

Special Considerations

  • Hand washing: use cold water and a gentle detergent for delicates, and press out excess water rather than wringing.
  • Dry cleaning: some garments like suits and wool coats need professional dry cleaning — always follow the care label.

Tips for Better Laundering

  • Don’t overuse detergent — follow the recommended amount.
  • Clean the washing machine regularly to prevent mould and detergent buildup.
  • Check and empty pockets before washing, and zip up zippers to prevent snagging.
  • Always read and follow care labels.
