Monolithic religions are faiths based on belief in one supreme God. Judaism, Christianity and Islam developed in the Middle East and influenced African societies in different periods.

Judaism

Judaism developed among the ancient Hebrews. Its teachings emphasize belief in one God, moral conduct, justice, religious law and the covenant tradition.

Christianity

  • Christianity originated in the first century CE from the teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • It spread through preaching, missionary work, trade, Roman connections and later European missions.
  • In Africa and Cameroon it influenced education, health services, literacy, architecture and social organization, while also affecting indigenous practices.

Islam

  • Islam originated in Arabia in the seventh century CE through the preaching of Prophet Muhammad.
  • It spread in Africa through trade, scholarship, migration, conquest and religious teaching.
  • In Cameroon it influenced trade, literacy, law, political organization and relations among communities.

General Effects

These religions contributed to education, written culture, moral teaching, trade and social institutions, but their spread also produced cultural tensions and changes in indigenous practices.
